Adaptil™ (which used to be called Dog Appeasing Pheromone or D.A.P. for short) mimics the properties of the natural pheromones that a mother dog emits to her newborn pups. Soon after giving birth, a mama dog generates pheromones that give her puppies a sense of well being and reassurance, known as “appeasing pheromones.” Pheromones are perceived through a specific action in the brain that is different from smelling odors. By replicating this signal of comfort, Adaptil™ helps alleviate fear and stress-related symptoms in puppies and adult dogs.
All forms of Adaptil™ (electric diffuser, spray and collars) work by releasing a chemically reproduced version of the natural stress-reducing hormones that a mother dog emits while nursing her puppies. It was developed many years ago by the well-known French pharmaceutical company CEVA in France, and has been used successfully in Europe for a long time to reduce or eliminate stress-related or arousal barking, destructiveness, whimpering and whining, urination and defecation in the house, thunder phobia, separation anxiety, noise phobia, new people and things in the environment, temporary changes like hospitalization or travel, and even aggression.
The electric diffuser or atomizer plugs into an electrical socket the way a room deodorizer does and releases the DAP substance. One atomizer can cover an area of 500 to 650 square feet for about a month.
The collar is considered the most potent delivery system of the pheromones as it is worn close to the skin so that the dog’s natural body heat causes the pheromones to be released. The collar can be left in place for an entire month, and the spray and room diffusers can also be used in cases where a dog has multiple issues with emotional calm.
