Tracie Receives Gracie Award!
Tracie is very proud to tell all of you dedicated listeners and fans that she has received a GRACIE Award (the radio equivalent of an Oscar) from the American Women in Radio & Television (AWRT) as OUTSTANDING HOST OF AN ENTERTAINMENT/INFORMATION SHOW ON PUBLIC RADIO. She will be flying out to California to accept her GRACIE at the awards luncheon May 25th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel (where they used to hold the Oscars and now host the Golden Globes). I had such a cool time chatting with Mackenzie Phillips on the CBS affiliate KOIN in Portland yesterday. We talked about great pet travel products from PETCO and I was able to give her the nifty Sherpa travel bag (they have a whole line of them at Petco) for her newly adopted second Chihuahua "One Eye" (who, you guessed it, has only one peeper!) Camp Pawsitive Adventure: Tracie Appearance Sept 23-26, 2010
Camp Pawsitive Adventure, 2010 promises to be another fun-filled adventure to enjoy with your favorite canine companion! The camp includes all lodging and meals, as well as activities to enjoy with your dog! This year's camp features agility, lure coursing, land and water retrieving, sheep herding, rally and obedience tips, as well as new events such as canine massage and carting! We will have a night of Freestyle Dancing with our dogs and we hope to start each morning with a Doga class.
We are very excited this year by the addition of a few new events! First, is the Animal Nutritionist, Tracie Hotchner, will be joining us. She will be hosting a seminar Friday morning to share her wisdom and knowledge on animal nutrition and all that our dogs want us to know.

Super Adoption Day in Philly, PA
Brad from Proportions manned the booth with Tracie at Super Adoption Day in Philadelphia to make Philly a No-Kill City. They handed out hundreds of samples of the delicious 3-course meals and in between, Tracie got to take a photo with Hector, one of Michael Vick's rescued fighting pit bulls who is an ambassador for his breed with a Canine Good Citizen certification and a very sweet nature.

Fostered Jax in Doggles
Here is Jax, looking very sharp in his Doggles for his jogs on the beach with Betsy Palazzo of Purr N Pooch in Tinton falls, NJ, who fostered Jax from a bad situation (that Kim Fernandez of "Morning Living" intervened to help with) but Betsy fell right in love and became his Forever Mom.
When I mentioned to Betsy of Purr N Pooch that her new adopted boy Jax is very fair skinned and might need sunblock to go along with his Doggles for beach jogging, she sent this to show he not only has bottled water with him but also a fancy dog sunblock called "Flea the Scene" which I must get hold of!

Tracie on Fox TV in Detroit for Halo
Tracie Gave Away Halo to the Fox TV Host in Detroit Yesterday
As part of Earth Day 2010, PETCO flew Tracie Hotchner to Detroit to appear on FOX TV to talk about "Reducing Your Pet's CO2 Paw print. Tracie talked about the many ways to be more eco-friendly in your pet-related choices of food (like HALO) which manufactures in an environmentally responsible way and creates less pet waste because the ingredients are more fully digested), organic toys (The Natural line of dye and chemical-free toys that Petco sells) biodegradable poop bags (also at Petco) corn-based compostable pet bowls, Bison leashes and collars made from recycled plastic water bottles which are spun into woven material, and eco-friendly cat litter.
There was a happy moment right after the live filming when the on-air host expressed interest in the bag of HALO Spot’s Stew and the can of Spot’s Stew and now his dog is going to be a convert to the best quality nutrition available.
Tracie was also in Detroit to celebrate Petco’s adoption weekend nationwide – which they held in partnership with HALO Purely for Pets – and Tracie as able to distribute HALO’S nifty $5 off coupons to everyone who attended.
While she was there she gave a talk on pet nutrition to a packed audience at the Westland store – all organized by the inimitable Kenn, who has often talked to Tracie on the air on her SiriusXM show on the Martha Stewart channel (two of his four cats are called Sirius and Martha, to give you some idea of his devotion). He is a driving force behind the Friends of Michigan Animal Rescue (FMAR).
There was a book signing with many copies of THE DOG BIBLE and THE CAT BIBLE flying out the door in the goody bags made by Kenn – with all profits going to the rescue.
On the air last year, Tracie orchestrated the generous donation to FMAR by HALO of Liv-a-Little treats and Dinner Party protein sprinkle – and she had Kenn on the air on CAT CHAT® with HALO’s David Yaskulka.
In addition, at Tracie’s suggestion this year, PETCO sent 800 cans of their own brand of SOULISTIC cat food (made by Tracie’s favorite cat food company Weruva just for Petco) to Friends of Michigan Animal Rescue.
She was so excited to have the opportunity to tour this 5013C non-profit shelter, which Tracie has been championing on CAT CHAT®. She met all the volunteers at the small private and charming facility that Marcy & Pete and all the Friends of Michigan Animal Rescue supporters have built into an admirable facility.

PETCO Donates 800 Cans of Soulistic Cat Food
PETCO donated 800 cans(!!) of their own brand of Soulistic cat food to Kenn at the Friends of Michigan Animal Rescue (FMAR) where once they learned the dangers of feeding dry cat food they took all their 300 cats off of "kitty crack" and feed them wet food exclusively. Hurray for FMAR! Hurray for PETCO. (P.S. PETCO is sending Tracie to FMAR for a book signing and pet nutrition talk on April 18th - try to be there!)

It is such great news that the HSUS, whose work I whole-heartedly support, has received the really important highest rating as a charity. This means that our donations are put to work in the most efficient and ethical ways. Ironically, there were years when detractors of the Humane Society of the United States flung mud about how contributions were squandered — that money was being wasted — to try to stop us from giving to HSUS. It is fantastic vindication to find that Charity Navigator has affirmed just the opposite. We can give with our hearts and know that animals will receive the maximum benefit of every dollar.

There are veterinarians who have additional training and are Board Certified Behaviorists. They can be found on the site for the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists www.veterinarybehaviorists.org
There are other vets who belong to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior AVSAB) at www.AVSABonline.org and have a particular interest in animal behavior.
Dr. Valarie Tynes has come on both shows to explain these distinctions which most of us do not realize. The most important thing to know is that you can find a veterinarian through these websites whose life is dedicated to psychological wellness for your four-legged family member — along with their physical well-being.

Don't Ditch Cats When You're Pregnant!
As I mentioned on the air, there was a terrible segment of a new and apparently popular show called "The Doctors" on network TV during which a supremely ignorant doctor ("supported' by the show's "fact checkers" who should be vetting her out and educating her) gave the horrible advice to someone wanting to become pregnant that she should get rid of her cats. As I shouldnt have to tell you, this is untrue and cruel advice. Green Mountain Animal Defenders in Vermont were kind enough to alert me to this travesty and to supply the following information links: the truth about cats and babies, and where you can give your two cents of opinion to "The Doctors" show folks. Please do it - for the sake of cats everywhere.

The Dog Bible (Omega-3 Oils Correction.)
Hi Tracie - we met at Glen Highland (I'm the herding instructor) after your talk on nutrition. I'm really enjoying your book (as I am your podcasts) and have a question; re giving your dog oil.......you gave each of us a wonderful bottle of Nordic Naturals fish oil in our “doggy bags”and touted it's benefits, but your book says giving dogs oil generally produces little effect as they tend to pass it on through.
I know I'm missing something - could you clarify please?

Tom - I am SO glad you caught this. Very astute of you - I had realized it myself and the contradiction was frustrating. As it turns out, I was in the process of working out how to update/replace that piece of The Dog Bible on oils. Believe it or not, when I was researching the book - let's say from 2003-2004 (the book was published in 2005) - there was NOTHING about omega-3's anywhere. Now it is such a hot topic.
So you are the FIRST person to see the new paragraph, which will be in the next printing of the book starting very soon:
OMEGA-3 FISH OILS (page 452)
Even dogs on great diets are still deficient in the Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. Research suggests that daily supplementation is a "health tonic" for dogs (and for us, too) - important for skin and coat health, the well-being of the eyes, heart and brain, and proven to reduce inflammation, especially in the joints. The oil capsules sold by vets usually don't even contain fish oil. I recommend and use the brand Nordic Naturals because the oil comes from fish in the cleanest waters with the strictest oversight by the Norwegian government in the purity of the oil.
