On CAT CHAT® I bemoaned how hard it is to give pills to poor Scooby Doo, who despises them and has to take 17 ½ pills every day right now, between his Lyme disease and post-surgical antibiotics. I hope this suggestion sent to me by Tracy (with a “y”) will help someone else with a similar problem!
I have a couple of suggestions. I know you have tried cream cheese, but the secret is to put the pill in cream cheese on one finger. Put cream cheese on at least one or two other fingers. Then let the dog lick one with just cream cheese, then the one with the pill, and then IMMEDIATELY put the other one with just cream cheese to be licked while their head is still up. The pill should slide right on down and be unnoticed while they lick the cream cheese off the last finger. The other thing to try is putting the pill in a sardine.
My dogs are great about taking pills. I just put it in their bowl on top of their food and they eat it right up. If they need a pill that is not at feeding time, I use the extra finger of cream cheese and it works every time. You just have to make sure they start licking the cream cheese before they drop their head with the cream cheese and pill in their mouth.
Let me know if this pill method works for your dog.
