Guide Dogs Get Special Treatment At The AMC

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

I was so pleased to hear from my new listener Ann, who heard my WOR show and is a patient of the fine dermatologist from the Animal Medical Center, Mark Macina, whom I had as a guest. She wrote:

Hi Tracie — I just finished listening to your program where you featured Dr. Macina from Animal Medical Center. I have a German Shepherd guide dog who has been my loyal guide and friend since April 2008.  When I got her, she had a lot of spots on her where there was no hair.  I took her to A.M.C. where they tested her for scabies, etc.  Everything came back negative.  She’s been seeing Dr. Macina for almost a year now and is now on an antihistamine, another medication to enhance hair growth, melatonin for hair growth and omega3.  She looks like a new dog.  I am also feeding her Wellness — lamb and all the treats that I give her are either Mother Hubbard or Wellness treats.  I had a bag of treats which I found out had chicken by-products in it and better be safe than sorry, I threw the bag away.  I just wanted you to know that I think the world of Dr. Macina.  Hazel’s allergy is not a food allergy, but I’m thinking about having Dr. Macina allergy-test her to see if we can find out what the allergy is.  If you have any suggestions, I’d be happy if you could send me an email.

P.S.  I do wet the Wellness since I have to put her meds in with the food.

Ann followed this up with a call into the show last week because I let her know that another listener who used a guide dog would be calling in to announce that my book THE DOG BIBLE is now available for sight-impaired dog owners. I told her that her dog’s diet needs to change to at least one half real protein and vegetables and that I hope she’ll sign up at www.Proportions.com to be amongst the first to get the trial sample of the feeding plan that would be a great help to a person without sight — three pouches, one with kibble (and she can continue with Wellness lamb or try another brand or flavor Smartpak Canine carries, including their own Live Smart premium dry food), a pouch of shredded chicken breast in pumpkin soup, and a pouch of raw dehydrated real vegetables and fruit. I predict his skin is going to get a lot better just from increasing the quality protein and less-processed ingredients.

Curing Skin Problems with Better Nutrition

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

I got this note from Lisa, who called into my radio show about her Lab Ally who has been suffering from skin problems and a hot spot resulting from them:

Thanks for suggesting I get my lab off Iams, in the past we did a food elimination diet and it didn’t seem to help, we also had a skin test done and the results showed that she is allergic to dust, cedar and mold but no apparent food allergies. Anyway she does seem much better, having a hard time getting rid of the hot spot. I am currently feeding her hamburger (boiled), shredded carrots and brown rice. I am also supplementing with Platinum Performance I need to get some Omega 3’s, I have been giving her the same ones I use but I think you said there was another brand that I should use, you touched briefly on commercial food that I can use, I think you said to use Halo, are there others and can I buy these at my local pet store? Thanks again!

First thing, I am really gratified that you understood my advice to get Ally off of commercial dry food she has been on exclusively, and thank you for going to the trouble of cooking for her and supplementing with Platinum Performance so that it is a balanced meal and contains many nutrients that have been lacking. The fish oil I recommend to everyone for themselves and their pets is Nordic Naturals, because it is the only one I have encountered which is 100% pure fish oil from sustainable fish and Norwegian seas. As for re-introducing kibble into her diet, I would recommend HALO (which uses only human grade meat in their dry food) from the new natural foods section of PETCO. I would also suggest that you go to SmartpakCanine.com and get a 5-day free sample of any of the kibble they carry — either LiveSmart, their own premium brand of lamb and rice or chicken & rice kibble — or any of the kind of Newman’s Own organic kibble or the whole Wellness line of dry food. That way you can discover which one she likes best (and you can switch to another the next month). The kibble arrives in a sealed portion pack, so the amount is just right and the food stays fresh. I also want to urge you and everyone listening to go to www.Proportions.com and sign up for the new monthly feeding plan, which Smartpak Canine has developed, based on my feeding theories. The trial samples will be ready after the holidays and you want to be amongst the first to try it since it solves ALL the balanced feeding issues. Meantime, feed a small quantity of the best dry kibble you can find, and make at least one half of her meal a quality protein source from a can or cooked meat, fish, chicken, eggs and/or cottage cheese and yogurt, and some vegetables. Feel free to call back into my shows any time and let’s get healthy skin and even drop a few pounds off Ally while we’re at it!

Platinum For Us

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Charlotte just joined Tracie’s Club so she could feel free to email me any time with questions and concerns about her three feline girls. She told me she was offering them raw frozen food for the first time and was surprised at how they fell right in love with it. She said she would go out and get a bottle of Nordic Naturals Omega-3 pet oil to round out their diet, and would be getting some for herself, too, since she suffers from terrible arthritis.  I was delighted to know her whole family would soon be on Nordic’s fish oil, but I wanted to add the kicker that would help to kick those joint problems in the butt – so to speak!

So I wrote her:

Charlotte – I’m about to rock your world. I used to take two Advil a day to be able to play tennis — various sore joints, aches etc.

I became friends with Dr. Alice Villalobos, the official oncologist of both radio shows, and was delighted to learn that she prescribes Platinum Performance for ALL her animal patients. But then she told me something I had never known: Platinum makes a human version and she & her husband — both very athletic — have been taking the human version for years.  It’s called Ortho-con and comes in capsules.

I have now been taking 6 capsules a day for 2 years and I play very competitive singles tennis 4-5 days a week. And guess how many Advil I’ve taken since starting Platinum?? Zero.

Platinum has other human products too. It comes in a powdered form (like what we give our dogs & cats) and they have a great energy bar made entirely of it.

Please call them (800-553-2400) and say you’re one of my very special listeners and ask what their best product for you would be — wow, will you be happy soon!

Nordic Naturals Gift Hits Home

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Britt Jung is the wonderful Vizsla breeder who joined me on DOG TALK® on the Meet the Breeders segment. Along with the other breeders and many of my guests during the year, I sent her a gift from myself and my website sponsor Nordic Naturals of a bottle of their omega-3 pet oil to try (along with some Wagatha’s biscuits). Britt said:

I take fish oil myself and look forward to trying it on the dogs thanks to your gift of the Nordic Naturals capsules. Have you used it with your dogs for a long time?

I told her: I haven’t been giving them Nordic Naturals omega-3 oils for very long – I only learned about the benefits about 6 months ago and have become gung ho in a short time period. Their coats are so shiny, much less shedding, but what I’m most excited about is what I cannot see – the big health benefits are the internal healing and strengthening properties against inflammation. That is what makes it such a health tonic.

I’m really pleased to hear that you already take omega-3 oils. Usually people give it to their pets and THEN take it themselves when they see the benefits – so you can do it in reverse!

Nordic Naturals for Pets a Big Savings!

Friday, December 12th, 2008

I got this very thoughtful note that pointed out something I didn’t realize: I haven’t made it clear enough that there is a pet version of Nordic Naturals and that’s the one I’ve been recommending. It’s every bit as pure and fresh as the human version – in fact, it’s the very same oil with different packaging (and Susanna says a lower price, too)!

I listen to your show on Sirius all the time and I just wanted to share with you a finding! Nordic Naturals has a PET FORMULA!! I found it when I was shopping for other stuff on this site. It’s really inexpensive compared to if you went to Whole Foods and bought a similar product for humans and gave it to your dog. Since you rave about this brand, I thought it only fair I let you know! Anyways, check out the link and read about it for yourself. Thank you for all that you do!

Happy Howlidays!
Susanna and Greyhounds – Flapjack and Bijou

Dear Susanna -

Aren’t you wonderful to share this link with me! I actually know that Nordic Naturals has a pet version of their omega-3 oil (my three dogs get some at every meal) but you have done me a big favor because I didn’t realize I wasn’t making this clear on the air. Now that you have pointed it out I’m going to be sure to tell folks that there are two versions of the oil – and also share your spot where they can buy it. I’m going to post your note on my website with the link – and I’m going to put Flapjack and Bijou up on my website in all their holiday finery.

Again my thanks for your thoughtfulness in sharing this with me and especially with other listeners. If you don’t know about my other radio show, Dog Talk®, I hope you’ll start listening to it and sign up for the podcast.

Cats Thrive on Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Fish Oil

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

I got this question from a regular listener:

Do you know of any spices or oils harmful to cats?  I have a Maine Coon cat and he goes crazy when I use the spice cloves and oil, which seems to drive him crazy like catnip. Also do you know if olive, coconut or almond oil in his food or rub on his coat, which seems to be dry and dull. Thank you.

I checked with Dear Sally for some specifics and then forgot that I hadn’t sent it on to you. Forgive me!Sally didn’t know about powdered spices (although the herb valerian is attractive to cats) but we both know that essential oils are no-nos, while hydrosols (by-products of essential oils) are acceptable. The first article mentions clove oil as not recommended. Some good links follow:

Re: the coat issue – what are you feeding him? If it’s dry food, please go right away to my website and read blogs & Q&A’s and get rid of that Kitty Crack right away. As soon as you switch him to wet food you need to add Omega 3 fish oil for his skin and coat and he should be much better in a matter of a week. Cats need the Omega 3 oil from an ANIMAL source – the best brand with purest oil is Nordic Naturals – read about them on my website. Putting oil ON the cat is useless and just makes a mess. The value of coconut oil is not clear  – the fish oil is the only way for the cat’s body to absorb it.

Old Dog with Bothersome Lumps

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

[Here’s a recent email from Jennifer about a delicate situation with an old dog –with my comment at the end]

I have an English Pointer who will turn 14 this November. Since the age of 5 he’s had benign lipomas in various parts of his body and I opted not to have them removed as they have never interfered with his mobility in any way. But there has been one that we’ve watched during the past year that is deep under his right shoulder and has grown significantly in the past three-five months. It is causing a slight limp and I notice that, while his spirit is barely affected, he has less interest in going for walks. When we do go on walks, that lipoma really starts to get in the way of his range of motion.

At this point in his life, I don’t know if surgery is the right or feasible option, given the effects of anesthesia on his body/mind. But in your experience, are there any homeopathic remedies that we can use on Wallace to minimize or even reduce this growth? It is not painful to the touch. He lets me massage it and do range of motion therapy on him. He is definitely a tired guy, but I want to give him the opportunity to live out the rest of his days comfortably and not tangled up by this lipoma on his shoulder. Any advice or guidance you can give, we would be greatly indebted.

Dear Jennifer,

I think you’re right to be concerned about anesthesia at his age – but I wonder what your vet’s opinion was about this?? One way to help with the inflammation and the range of motion would be to get some platinum performance supplement for him right away – there is a link on my Website and you can call up and have a conversation to figure out which of the formulas might most assist him. Additionally, I cannot say enough about the health benefits of omega-3 oil, and Nordic Naturals has the purest ones on the market. I also have them linked on my website – I invited both companies to become sponsors of my website because I believe in the importance of the products.

Please let me know what results you get – it should not take more than 10 days to 2 weeks to see a real improvement.
