Anxiety Wrap Conquers Thunderstorm Fear

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

I finally had occasion to see for myself that this simple little stretch garment can help a dog who has to be peeled off the ceiling at the sound of thunder.

So many of you have written me and called into my shows about your dogs who are so terrified of thunderstorms that you now live in dread of stormy weather — your dogs have created storm phobia in you! When I researched and wrote THE DOG BIBLE I knew there were a lot of dogs who got shaky during storms and I had learned about the Anxiety Wrap as the most effective tool to manage the problem. In my own canine pack the only thunder phobic members was Yogi Bear, my 110 lb Rottweiler, who was otherwise the most happy-go-lucky guy but when there was thunder he trembled and panted drips of saliva everywhere. But with him, I didn’t need any special management tools. I could encourage him to go lie down underneath the hanging clothes in a walk-in closet that did not have any exterior walls, and that contained his fear enough that it never became panic.

But once I spent time on the radio I discovered how many people have dogs who come completely unglued in a storm — people whose dogs will jump through screen doors or plate glass windows if they are alone when a storm hits. Other people have dogs who will try to chew their way through a door from the terror of thunder. And for all these people, it is distressing and makes them feel powerless to help their dogs when they are with the dog in a storm to experience the fierce trembling, panting, whining and misery of a dog who has become unglued by the effects of a thunder storm. When they call or write me for advice I recommend the Bach flower remedy made by Spirit Essences called “Stress Stopper” but I know that it doesn’t work in all dogs and for a dog going bonkers, it may take the edge off at best. I would mention Anxiety Wrap to people — saying that my research showed that this tightly fitting but breathable “body glove” that compressed a dog’s torso like a glove had been proven to calm and settle those dogs to varying degrees. Mothers in every culture know how swaddling a baby tightly helps with a fussy little one, who quiets down because of the security and comfort being tightly wrapped.

I have always felt terrible for these people whose homes are under siege and their dog is in jeopardy whenever the storm season arrives.

And I have always felt grateful and a little proud that none of my dogs has ever made a big deal of thunder. I thought it might be because I was such a calm and reassuring leader. I had to think again. And go hunting in my doggy closet for the Anxiety Wrap I had received as a sample and had kept in case someone needed it in the future. Well that day was here — and the recipient was me, which was the last thing I’d expected!

One not-so-fine day one of my very own dogs, Scooby Doo, woke up and was suddenly thunderstorm phobic — as though someone had waved a nasty wand over his head. When the thunderstorm rolled in, Scooby came over to me trembling and panting (all the classic symptoms) and then he tried to squeeze underneath my desk. He’s over 100 lbs. so there is not room for him and my legs under there! I quickly put a dropper full of Stress Stopper from Spirit Essences in his mouth — and I slipped him into the Anxiety Wrap. [I saw later that the directions said to try it on your dog once before a thunderstorm so he doesn't make an association between the "Wrap" and the storm and deduce that the Anxiety Wrap was responsible for the storm -- but I had no time] The Anxiety Wrap had not been on his body 5 minutes when Scooby Doo was a changed man — and I was a true believer!

The Anxiety Wrap

Synchronicity occurred because the two women who developed the Anxiety Wrap reached out to me and asked if they could become website sponsors.  And yes it is a two-woman company: two people who put an idea into action and have been perfecting it ever since. For example, they stayed on the lookout for a new and improved 4-way stretch fabric that is light, can breathe, and has just the right cling to squeeze a dog’s body just enough so he can pull himself back together.

Happy ending: Scooby Doo slides into his Anxiety Wrap at the least sign of noisy storm and is a much braver boy. And I invited the Anxiety Wrap ladies, Susan and Kimberly, to join my team so I can get the word out to other storm-phobic dogs. Susan is coming on DOG TALK® and CAT CHAT® too, to explain that her expertise as a dog trainer is available free for a lifetime to any dog who is lucky enough to get Anxiety Wrap to really chill him out in stressful time.

Thunderstorm Phobia

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

My dog Tegan was VERY freaked by the Thunderstorm this evening. Not at first, but when it got close he ran upstairs (wouldn’t eat dinner) and sat in the bathroom trembling. I just took him out when the thunderstorm (and rain) ended but he was very difficult to handle, I did get him to pee but he kept trying to get back to the house. I recommend taking them out separately for a quick walk close by if there have been thunderstorms and he seems uneasy. Poor guy, this is my first experience with a dog that is frightened of T-storms.

Michelle

Rescue Remedy from Spirit Essences was made for humans, but Spirit Essences are made specifically for animals based on the same Bach flower essences. (there is also a 5% discount for my listeners – my website explains)

STRESS STOPPER is the one for thunderstorms – it is fantastic – give several drops on the tongue and rub inside ears and on the paw pads themselves – can repeat as often as needed.

You can also buy an Anxiety Wrap – a neoprene wrap-around blanket that velcros into place around the dog’s middle. Listen to the podcast of my recent interview with Temple Grandin on DOG TALK® (downloadable off my website) during which I asked her about thunderstorm phobia. She said swaddling the dog, or wrapping anything wide around the torso and holding it snugly in place – can help with fear. At the least, press your hands on either side of the rib cage.

DO NOT take the dog outside – worst place possible. Find an indoor space (walk in closet, bathroom) with no exterior walls) and let your dog huddle in there. Tranquilizers not recommended because they do not address the underlying fear.

The Dog Bible has a list of suggestions about this phobia.

It will transfer to the other dogs so get a grip on it ASAP.

Cannot Find Stress Stopper

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

I was listening to you yesterday on “Living Today” on Martha Stewart Sirius 112. You were answering a caller’s question about trimming her dog’s nails. You mentioned a product called either “Stress Blocker” or “Stress Buster.” I looked it up on the web, and haven’t been able to find anything. Can you tell me the maker of the product? Also, what stores would I be able to find it at? Is it homeopathic, as well?

Thanks! from Dog owner Cheryl M.

Hi Cheryl – The product you heard me talk about was Stress Stopper, which is made by Spirit Essences, which is linked on my website TracieHotchner.com as a website sponsor. There is a whole page devoted to these amazing natural extracts of flowers (based on the Bach flower remedies from which Rescue Remedy for people was born).

You can order right from there and be sure to put in Cat Chat to get the 5% listener discount.

However, I’d love to know more about your dog and in what circumstances she is experiencing stress, since some of the other Spirit Essences work even more specifically on the underlying emotional cause of distress. Would you be able to call into Cat Chat® on a Wednesday night at 8 PM EST? We could discuss your situation and I might be able to steer you to the Spirit Essence that could get right to the heart of the matter. If not, look at the description of what each Spirit Essence was formulated to help with and using that along with stress stopper in highly charged circumstances might bring everything back into harmony for your dog. Please call if you can!

Texas Troubles

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

I just love people who live with high maintenance dogs, try everything they are told or can think of to solve the problem, and then are just as willing to try something else when they hear that. I admire the tenacity and forgiveness and unconditional love folks like Sharon show their pooches.

Since moving to Texas 3 years ago and living the country outside a small town, I do a lot of driving to Austin and San Antonio. I was so glad to hear you on Sirius on my trip on Wednesday.

Miller, our adopted mixed breed who was about one and half, adapted well to our two adults, no other pet home. He seems to have lived on the run and is still shy and startles easily after two years with us. To go with this sensitivity – his GI is sensitive as well. This morning he sat down, had a strange look on his face and then vomited an orange liquid with foam. He had no food and water for eight hours. He does this once a month. More often he has loose stools. He has us trained to take him out to do his “business.” I am fairly certain he is the only country dog that has to be walked to do this – he needs the company. Since Miller does not know how to request to go outside – he might stand by the door but one needs to notice – he has diarrhea accidents – always in the dining room on our most expensive rug.

I used to give him some of our dinner in his dish after we had eaten and this was in addition to his meal. He had half Merrick kibble and half canned – total 3/4 cup – he weighs 30 pounds. With his reoccurring diarrhea, I stopped the table food. Then I stopped the canned food. From the part of the show I heard on January 28th – I got this backwards.

I read about cooking the chicken and vegetables, Platinum Performance and Bio Sponge. What advice do you have for Miller and me?

When we travel, Miller boards at his groomer’s – a low-key kennel – but not home. Miller usually ends up with diarrhea from boarding after 4 days, which I assume, is from the stress. His vet has given us DiaGel to give him before going to board, which helped the last time.  Any tips on that situation?

Miller loves people and living in the country. He has gotten into some trouble with a skunk and chased some deer and his favorite rabbit – but he is such good company. Cooking for him would be a pleasure.

Thank you for your enthusiasm and work on behalf of our four legged friends.

Fondest regards,

Sharon
Fredericksburg, Texas

Dear Sharon –

I am assuming you’ve had a vet check Miller over to make sure there is nothing medically wrong with him – if that is the case then it’s time to manage his stress and digestion system.

This guy needs some stress-reduction and some easily digested food. Absolutely cook up a big pot of chicken, rice and grated carrots (1/3 of each) and give him that. You can freeze big Baggies of it. He’ll need the Platinum Performance to supplement and make sure he’s getting all his vitamins and minerals. Bio Sponge might be a nice addition – but I’d also suggest a Pepcid AC (generic is fine – I use it on two of my own dogs) every NIGHT before bed to reduce acid in his stomach.

I cannot recommend the Spirit Essences highly enough for the underlying emotional issues – go to that page on my website and see which Essence best describes his personality. Is he fearful? Insecure? Separation issues? (Or does he just not like that boarding place??) Maybe try some other arrangement – a friend with a dog whom you could trust to take him?? Someone you trust to stay over at your house (you could give them the same as what you pay the boarding place).

For the Spirit Essences: I’d say NERVOUS NELLY – a few drops in both meals along with a few drops of TRAUMA FREE – it sounds like he’s got some old issues that haven’t resolved. STRESS STOPPER is great to have to put in his mouth or rub on ears or under his feet right at the moment he is freaking out. I use all 3 of these one on of my dogs who shares some of Miller’s issues. Mention CAT CHAT when checking out of the Spirit Essence website and you get 5% off.

What Was the Name of the Herbal Remedies?

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

This came from Jill, who heard me talk about Spirit Essences and wants to try them.

Hi Tracie – I am trying to recall the name of the two herbal remedies you talked about on the air recently? The one you put five drops and rub on the ears or feet and one you put in the dog’s food.

I have a 14 month old puppy who has recently started growling and barking at other dogs at dog shows. If left off the lead she will warm up to the dogs and play. But it is embarrassing!

She has an enormous amount of energy. I don’t know whether she would have displayed this anyway, but she was given two sets of puppy inoculations too many (by accident) The vet did not think that it was a problem, and I am not sure that this is what affected her. I think it is when she is not exercised enough that some of this happens.

She is a gorgeous and sweet dog and is allowed to sleep on the bed or wherever. I have another puppy in the house who also has a dominant personality. So far this has not been a terrible problem, but she is coming back from a show and has been out of my house for three weeks, I would like to start giving her those herbs to see if it has any affect on her.

-Jill

I’d love to have more information about Jill’s dogs — what breed they are, for starters –- and whether they are spayed or neutered? Being show dogs, they may be intact, which would help explain some dominance issues. However, there are certainly some Spirit Essences she should be trying immediately, the most relevant being a set of 3 essences called “Ultimate Peacemaker.” It is a combination of Pacemaker, Bully Remedy and Self-Esteem. If you go to my website and to the Spirit Essence page there, you can read the intention of those formulas. Also, be sure you put DOGTALK in the coupon code box so you get the 5% discount.

I just had an INCREDIBLE experience once again with the essences tonight –- a friend came for Christmas with her sweet small non-threatening Black Lab Ollie and one of my dogs – Scooby Doo – was horrible towards him. When Ollie approached Scooby on his bed Scooby stood up snarling, showing his teeth and growling quite seriously. After trying to manage it with discipline and “go to your place” and putting a leash on Scooby, I suddenly remembered the Spirit Essences: I gave Scooby a little squirt in his mouth of Stress Stopper and rubbed some on his head, then I sprayed Scooby, Ollie and the dog bed areas with Safe Space for dogs. I had two witnesses – one of them Ollie’s owner – see Scooby stop the whole hostile routine, go into a comfortable sleep on his dog bed and lie right net to Ollie an hour later as if they were old buddies. It was simply mind-boggling! My enthusiasm for Spirit Essences grows by the day!

Rambo Marking His Human!

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

And you think YOU have problems?? How about being your cat’s peeing target?!

I am having a problem with my male Bengal, Rambo, who is now going on 2 years old. He seems to be marking me, his Mom, as his territory. He will jump up on the bed next to me and start to pee right by me. It is periodic, but definitely planned. Once it happened right after I had given him tons of affectionate pets — so maybe that excited him in some way. Sometimes he will try to mark my husband’s leg as well.

The first instance that I noticed an urination problem was when he was about a year old. I was packing for a business trip and Rambo peed on my jacket that I had placed in my suitcase. I decided that was his way of trying to tell me not to leave him. We also have a half-sister to Rambo — she is 6 months younger than Rambo and they get along well. I don’t think multiple pets are the problem here.

Any suggestions out there as to what I should do — other than to spray myself with this pheromone stuff?

Thanks for any help from Mary & Rambo

Wow! Peeing right on you! That is pretty intense and pretty darned weird! I don’t think I’ve heard of that one before! Sometimes, cats are attached to one of their owners and this guy seems to be attached to both of you. He does seem to be marking you as his own. Using a synthetic pheromone like Feliway on yourself is not going to curb this outrageous activity! I agree with you that this is definitely emotionally based so my best advice would be to try a couple of the homeopathic solutions from a company called Spirit Essence – these are based on Bach flower remedies and formulated to help with cats (and dogs) emotional responses. You will put a few drops in his food and a rub a few drops of the other on his ears and paw pads. Go to my website for the link to Spirit Essences (and a listener discount!) but I’d recommend “Safe Space” in his food and “Separation Anxiety” or “Stress stopper” to put on him several times a day. I recently tried Spirit Essences on my two more neurotic dogs and the transformation was mind-boggling. They say to expect to see a shift in attitude in about 10 days, but I saw it in one! Please let me know how it works.
