Cats & Kids on the Navajo Indian Reservation

My name is Patty and I live in northwest Arizona on the Navajo Indian Reservation.  We have great difficulty educating our community on the care of animals, and as a result many animals in our area suffer tremendously through disease, neglect and even abuse.  The people in our community also suffer greatly from the effects of poverty and dysfunction.

Anyway, the reason I want to communicate with you is that I am a school teacher at Tsehootsooi Elementary School in Fort Defiance and we are planning a "Read Across America" day On March 3, 2008.  We will have lots of special events that promote reading.  I am always trying to think of ways to incorporate animal care into my work with students and it is no different with the "Read Across America" event.

I am planning a display called "My Family's Cat in the Hat" which will showcase pictures of students with their family cats (or we'll take any pet picture we can), and we will place a little red and white striped paper Dr. Seuss hat on each cat's picture.  Okay, it may sound kind of odd, but kids love to see pictures of themselves and/or their animals.  We will identify each cat by name and the hope is that when other students (and even adults) see that animals are a part of a family, they too may start thinking about the animals in their own lives.

So, to the point…I am hoping that you might be able to donate a few cat chat hats, a Cat Bible or Dog Bible or anything else that we might be able to use as prizes, giveaways or incentives.  Anything, even stickers would be tremendously appreciated.

Also, I must tell you how much I love your show.  I am a recent wet food convert.  I had no idea why my 14 year old cat Loosie was so picky about her food.  Now I know she was a kitty-crack addict.  Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

Keep up the great work with your show!

Thank you!

Dear Patty

How great that you wrote to me about the wonderful work you are doing. I am very excited to help you in many ways:

1) I will send a copy of both THE CAT BIBLE and THE DOG BIBLE - either for raffle or for the library??

2) I will send special bookmarks that say TEACH KIDS TO READ DOGS about dog/child safety from HSUS - How many kids are in the school??

3) I am going to get your kids a subscription to the KIND news from HSUS (I contribute to the program and classrooms get picked) - its just what they and you will love it.

4) If you can take those photos and send them to me as a jpeg I can post them ALL together on CAT CHAT as a special class I salute for caring about their cats . Maybe we could get all the kids on a telephone on the show itself (we'll pick a Wednesday night to do it) to say what they love about their kitties?? That would be really fun and validate the issues you are teaching them about caring and compassion.

Best wishes,
Tracie

P.S.. I am going to send you a wonderful children's book for your library about a dog called CHOWDER that I think the kids will really love.
