Off Kitty Crack & Drinking Less, Too!

First of all- I love listening you on Sirius! And we did finally convert to canned cat food after we heard it discussed repeatedly on your show!

[Tracie: Hurray! I'm proud of you - and grateful that you trusted my recommendation.]

Our 2 siamese mix brothers - 6 year olds - seem to be adjusting fine- just a couple of questions:

1. I do notice the decreased use of water - this normal right ? But I should still offer it.

[Tracie: Cats don't naturally drink water, so those who were drinking a lot were dehydrated from all the highly processed corn based dry food - once you give them the proper fuel, they don't have an unnatural thirst. You can still put out some water but may not see the level go down much (but still change it once a day and wash out the bowl well, too.)]

2. They have much fewer bowel movements with the canned food- is that normal?

[Tracie: Absolutely - cats begin to have a normal healthy amount of bowel activity once you stop filling them with the indigestible plant matter and highly processed carbohydrates, which is what the "kitty crack" in the bag is made of.]

3. I did notice that they no longer have dry flaky coats - a good thing.

[Tracie: Healthier hair and skin is just one of the many physical benefits - there are many others you cannot see as clearly.]

4. If I feed them each a small can - they throw up often afterwards -

[Tracie: This can happen when cats are too eager for the delicious new wet food and gobble it down so fast it comes right back up. you can remedy this by giving small a portion (a tablespoon) and waiting for the cat to finish before adding anymore to his plate or bowl.]

And now I split a can -- but they seem hungry all the time - how do I regulate that?

[Tracie: They don't just appear to be hungry, they are hungry! I know you meant well (and were concerned about the vomiting) but an average cat needs at least a full can at each of two meals. so they need to get about twice as much food.

Giving each one a small can at both meals is about standard, but as much as a cat will eat in a 15 minute period is also a good gauge. Some cats experience a "carbohydrate withdrawal when they come off of what i call "kitty crack" so they may need much more canned food at first and will taper off in time.]

Thanks again for all you do and all the good advice you give.

—Sigita

Thanks for saying that — it's the responsiveness of listeners like you that inspires me. Thanks so much for writing and for your excellent questions.
