Help for a Puking Kitty Cat
Love your show. I took your advise and switched my cats to wet food and what a difference. They made the transition several months ago quite nicely and they all look great. However, as of a couple of weeks ago one of my cats has started vomiting, every day. I checked your web site and read about another vomiting cat and you suggested it might be a food allergy. I tried switching her to a food without fish as suggested (which is hard to find) and while there was no vomiting when I made the switch, the vomiting has returned (funny, she doesn't vomit the tuna fish I occasionally give as a treat). She seems very healthy otherwise -- very active, beautiful coat, bright, clear eyes and she certainly isn't losing (or gaining) any weight.
Thought it might be tapeworms - we had a flea issue in the home. But I've dealt with tapeworms before and don't see any signs.
Any ideas? Thanking you for your help,
Lauren
Hi, Lauren –
I checked with Dear Sally and we both think it may be that the cat is eating too quickly - gobbling is common, especially after switching from dry food - so it comes right back up.
You might try feeding small amounts and giving meals more frequently.
You don't mention her age or whether this vomiting is every day, but a check up at the vet might be in order.
Any cat over 7 or 8 needs at least a once-yearly checkup with blood work or even twice a year but my best guess is that the throwing up is over-enthusiasm!
Let me know either what the vet says or whether the smaller more frequent meals helps.
Best wishes,
Tracie

A follow up (from Lauren):
Your email about your special show tonight jogged my memory that I should let you know how the puking cat is doing. You were right that she was eating too fast, but not because the food is so good. MJ (as we call her) is the household matriarch - we still have the cat she mated with, one of her "kids" and 2 of her "grand-kids" (all fixed now). She is such a mom and still tends to the other cats' every need.
She was eating so fast because as the other cats finished their food they'd nudge her away from her dish. Being the good mom, she'd let them eat.
We now feed her away from the other cats, and feed her 2x a day. Fixed the problem.
Thanks again for your help,
Lauren
