CAT CHAT® and the cats of America have hit the jackpot: one of our country’s renowned feline veterinarians asked to become part of our community. Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins heard through patients that I was telling my audience to stop giving their cats dry food, something I had figured out through independent investigative research into feline medical problems with diabetes, urinary and digestive problems. Dr. Hodgkins has come to the same conclusion (that dry foods are detrimental to cats) by a much more prestigious route: she has been a vet for 30 years, more than 8 of them working inside Hill’s Pet Nutrition (the division of Colgate-Palmolive that makes popular dry cat foods many of you are feeding). Furthermore, she was issued a patent for her revolutionary idea that cats are harmed by feeding highly-processed carbohydrate-containing foods: she assigned that patent to Purina so they could develop a first-of-its-kind canned food for diabetic cats (which has since been widely copied with modification to avoid the patent).

Elizabeth Hodgkins brings incredible wisdom and experience to the show because she has devoted her life to wellness in cats, first spending time inside a huge pet food company and then turning her back on those products. Oh, I didn’t mention she also has a law degree!

Dr. Hodgkins has a cats-only practice in Southern California, the All About Cats Health Center in Yorba Linda (www.all-about-cats.com), and she has dedicated herself to the management of diabetes in cats (See www.YourDiabeticCat.com). For those of us not lucky enough to live in her neighborhood, we can turn to her on CAT CHAT for the truth about the foods we’re feeding and other medical issues.

Dr. Hodgkins is world-renowned for her work curing diabetes -- that's right, stopping the disease - in cats who have just developed it, as well as her life-saving methods for keeping diabetic cats healthy. The attached file is her explanation for her theories as well as specific guidelines for doing so. If you are a veteran cat owner who has dealt with diabetic cats before, you may feel comfortable putting this protocol to use, but for most people you want to try to work together with your own vet in implementing these logical yet not universally-followed guideliness in keeping your cat's diabetes under control.
