Tracie Hotchner is the author of the million-copy bestseller Pregnancy & Childbirth, which was nominated for the American Book Award, as well as three other books on pregnancy. She has appeared on national talk shows, including the Today show and Oprah. She lives in Bennington, Vermont with her three dogs, Jazzy, Billy Blue, and Scooby Doo.

Tracie explains the origins of The Dog Bible:

“The answer to why I wrote this book is sort of the opposite of Mt. Everest and why people climb it - in this case, I wrote the book because it did not exist. Having owned and loved dogs literally from the time I was born, I have so often wanted information or had problems and been unable to find information or get reliable advice. I realized that I’m not alone - all dog lovers need a book they can reach for with support and information on any subject relating to their dogs. The way that parents can consult Dr. Spock to clarify a situation and make informed decisions for their particular situation, so should people have an encyclopedic guide for their canine companions.

The idea for this book actually originated with my father, the author A.E. Hotchner. He said I never came into New York City because I preferred being in the woods with my dogs – which I happily admitted. So he suggested that I write a book about dogs since I’d been communing so easily with four-legged beasts since my formative years growing up alongside young Pango – and showed no signs of letting up. Never one to turn down a challenge – and after a heated discussion about whether I’d ever met a dog I didn’t like - I rose to the occasion of this book and set out to climb Mt. Everest.”

Tracie explains her history with dogs:

“My first sibling was a Bedlington Terrier named Pango, who was six months older than me. Although my parents were loving, and did nothing to create sibling rivalry, Pango did precede me into the family and there were times when I wondered whether they preferred Pango to me. This early canine exposure may explain my ability to see things from a dog’s perspective, given that my formative months were spent on the floor with him. It may also explain why I have never lived without a dog in my life… and then eventually never without two dogs… and over the last decade never without three canine companions (all adopted/rescued).

Description of the book:

The Dog Bible” is the first all-inclusive comprehensive guide to everything pertaining to the relationship of people and their dogs - the one book all dog people need on their shelves to find information and answers about any question or concern. This book is being called “the Dr. Spock for dogs:” finally, dog lovers have an authoritative, unbiased guide to sharing their life with a dog.
