Dog Talk (2-17-2012) Dr. Sue Ettinger is an oncologist who co-authored the extraordinary THE DOG CANCER SURVIVAL GUIDE, with Dr. Demian Dressler, an essential resource for anyone whose dog has been diagnosed with this rampant disease. (Dr Ettinger can be found at animalspecialtycenter.com or DrSueCancerVet.com); John Woestendiek wrote DOG, INC. about the world of dog cloning and the fascinating rogues and dreamers he encountered; Dog Talk's® own Official Trainer Allison Denlea of Paws4Positive Training discusses the use of basket muzzles for aggressive dogs and the mantra "Until you can train, manage and restrain." For those who realize a muzzle may be in order for their own dog, you can go to KVVetsupply.com and use the phrase "Italian basket muzzle" or here are some links:

Dog Talk (2-10-2012) Tracie talks about recognizing and managing the pain that older dogs have from arthritis and adopting all the measures available as soon as you see signs of stiffness, difficulty getting up and moving around: a high quality joint supplement like Platinum Performance, an ecologically conscious and pure omega-3 fish oil like Nordic Naturals, use of anti-inflammatory medication like Metacam, a series of Adequan injections and finally the turn-back-the-clock miracle of stem-cell treatment; Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins discusses the pheromone spray and diffuser Feliway — when to use it and where not to employ it; Dr. Michael Moyer is the head of the department of shelter medicine at the University of Pennsylvania veterinary school and discusses how to improve conditions in shelters for cats, which lowers their stress, reduces illness spreading, and increases adoptions because cats are more relaxed.
Dog Talk (2-3-2012) Dr. Karen Sueda (a veterinary behavior specialist at the VCA Hospital in West Los Angeles) discusses inter-cat aggression: how to avoid it, identify it, and resolve it; if you've ever wondered what owning a wolf or wolf-hybrid would be like, Ceiridwen Terrill's riveting account in PART WILD of buying and raising a wolf-hybrid puppy will cure you of any such misguided impulse; Dr. Annie Forslund (a California vet who specializes in-home pet euthanasia) discusses end-of-life issues and how to determine when "the time has come." (Find more information at www.HomePetEuthanasia.com.)
Dog Talk (1-27-2012) Dr. Elsey personally created all the cat-conscious litters for Precious Cat litter, and talks about the new Respiratory Relief Litter for asthmatic kitties and their people, as well as the "Save 5, Give 5" campaign for Multiple Myeloma Research; Paul Chutkow talks about the delights and challenges chronicled in his memoir ZELDA: The Queen of Paris about rescuing a New Delhi street dog and taking her along to Paris when he moved; Dr. Dennis Lawler is a research veterinarian who discusses the pitfalls in looking for black and white answers in biological medical situations (like rules about the rabies vaccine) when the answers are actually shades of gray.
Dog Talk (1-20-2012) Are you in the New York area and want to explore doing Happiness Visits with your dog to nursing homes, schools, hospitals or the Ronald McDonald house? Learn more about it from Nancy George-Michalson, the program coordinator of the NYC Pet Partners program and part of the Delta Society (http://www.deltasociety.org/); a Cinderella story that's too good to be true (but it is!) Dan Stallings founded the Mid-Atlantic Weimaraner rescue and, in the process of rescuing dogs, he saved the life of one dog who was in deplorable condition -- and happened to be an intact male with registration papers. Hear how under his show name Unforgettable this dog went from rags to riches and in a short time became a Grand Champion who will actually be competing at the Westminster Dog Show next month; Dr. Demian Dressler is a vet in Hawaii who has co-written THE DOG CANCER SURVIVAL GUIDE that should be on the shelf of any owner with a dog breed at risk for cancer -- and everyone whose dog already has cancer -- and even humans fighting cancer. A monumental work that is a life-changer and lifesaver.
Dog Talk (1-13-2012) Kimberly from the Anxiety Wrap company explains that the scientific torso compression (based on Temple Grandin's work) and acupressure points in the design of the Anxiety Wrap are what has given so much relief to Tracie's thunderstorm scairedy-cat Scooby Doo (who now also reacts the same way when the generator does a self-test every Saturday and makes him think the power has gone out so there must be a storm!) Kimberly tells how Tufts University Veterinary school did a study using the Anxiety Wrap that showed a nearly 90% reduction in anxiety behaviors during thunderstorms; Marine Mike Dowling talks about his fantastic Military Working Dog Sergeant Rex and his work alongside the dog in Iraq, which he chronicled so vividly in his book SERGEANT REX: The Unbreakable Bond Between a Marine and his Military Working Dog; Lucy Postins, the owner of The Honest Kitchen discusses being a small private company and having the freedom to "give back" and make charitable contributions -- which she considers a privilege (and which makes Tracie really cross that some people have the gall to criticize her choice of charities!)
Dog Talk (1-06-2012) A sampling of Tracie's favorite conversations with Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, from their weekly podcast "Humane Talk" on www.HSUS.org: first, the brutal practice of horse "soring" in the three-and-five gaited horse show world, intentionally causing pain to a horse's feet to make them step higher; second, the heartwarming tale of an animal shelter created right next to a prison in Louisiana where dogs live with select prisoners who train and ready them for adoption; and finally, the concept of Meatless Mondays, both for people and pets, to raise awareness of and reduce the environmental impact of meat consumption.
Dog Talk (12-30-2011) A year-end treat! A long conversation with the divine and inimitable author Alexander McCall Smith -- adored by millions for his many series of books (The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series being Tracie's favorite) -- who has finally made a dog the center of another hilarious series that introduces the Pimlico Terrier. (No, there is no such thing!) Freddie de la Hay in Corduroy Mansions and continues with The Dog Who Came in From the Cold. Alexander calls from his native Scotland to discuss his creative process -- where does he get inspiration from for his unforgettable characters? -- and explains how dogs and cats have fit into his own life (Augustus Basil the Tonkinese kitty being his current pet); Tracie discusses a recent cover article in the Sunday New York Times that highlighted the physical harm being done by breeders to the English Bulldog, and she goes further to include many other breeds being harmed by short-sighted breeding like the Pug, the American German Shepherd and even people insisting on "chocolate" standard poodles (many of which are the purposeful result of incest); Tracie does a year-end wrap up with Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, of animal-related accomplishments that really mattered in 2011 and resolutions for animals in the New Year.
Dog Talk (12-23-2011) Yolanda Eisenstein's Texas law firm specializes in animal law and her book for the American Bar Association, Careers in Animal Law: Welfare, Protection and Advocacy is an inspiration and blueprint for those in law school looking to dedicate their talents to the betterment of animals, or for practicing lawyers or even retired ones who want to do pro bono work that benefits animals by improving laws; author Bill Henderson is the renowned East Hampton creator of Pushcart Press and the Pushcart Prize -- and now has written an utterly delightful memoir called All My Dogs, which also chronicles life as it used to be in the Hamptons from the more civilized 1960s; Julie Klam wrote You Had me at Woof which she now follows with her new book, Love at First Bark, with further adventures in dog rescue and good humored self-awareness.
SAVE 5, GIVE 5 CAMPAIGN ($5 COUPON FOR CAT ATTRACT LITTERS) "Save 5, Give 5" campaign by Precious Cat litter, which is a generous supporter of DOG TALK® (and Kitties, too!) Get a $5 coupon for Cat Attract and other litters and Precious Cat will donate $5 to Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. Dr. Elsey's wife Kathy is fighting against the cancer Multiple Myeloma and their company wants to continue funding research as they have with over $3 million already! Please help and get $5 off on your litter at the same time! Read more.
Dog Talk (12-16-2011) Dr. Alice Villalobos, world-renowned cancer veterinarian (and the Official Oncologist of both DOG TALK® and CAT CHAT®) talks about her new concept of identifying a 5th stage of a pet's life -- End of Life (EOL) -- which emphasizes quality of life in the final days, weeks or months for a pet; author Carl Anthony talks about how he dedicated himself to managing his adopted Weimaraner's End of Life and the article he wrote for Huffington Post about his experience (link to Part 2 below); Tracie discusses the difference in feeding carbohydrates to cats vs. dogs and how toy dogs have no need at all for dry food, while premium kibble can be one component of a large and active dog's menu. (Helping Old Pets, Part 1, Part 2)
Dog Talk (12-9-2011) Tracie reads a very touching letter from a couple who took her advice to get their sickly kitties off "kitty crack" and onto her favorite canned cat food, Weruva; Tracie wanted to share some of her favorite segments from the weekly online podcast Humane Talk that she has been creating for the website of the Humane Society of the United States with its CEO Wayne Pacelle. The first segment explains ballot initiatives and how politics can work to undermine animal welfare legislation; the second is about the importance of "Just Saying No to Fur" and the ethics of companies that go Fur Free, like "O" Magazine which now refuses fur ads and Overstock.com which has removed any real fur on any of their millions of items; the final segment is about the massive job of saving the lives of donkeys in Hawaii that have been abandoned after no longer being useful in the sugar trade and were airlifted to sanctuaries and adoptions on mainland U.S. by HSUS. (Tracie encourages others to adopt donkeys as she has!)
Dog Talk (12-2-2011) Betsey McFarland is the Senior Vice President for Companion Animals at the Humane Society of the United States and she recounts the extraordinary rescue mission undertaken to airlift a colony of feral cats off San Nicolas Island -- and the sanctuary where they are now housed, including a webcam to watch them (all links to the story and webcam are below); Karen Shanor, who wrote BATS SING, MICE GIGGLE: The Surprising Science of Animals' Inner Lives, discusses what we can learn from animals (especially the importance of play and naps!); the Official Dog Trainer of DOG TALK®, Allison Denlea of Paws4Positive Training, explains to Tracie why her youngest dog Teddy has learned bad attitudes from her older, more neurotic dogs -- and how daily obedience "homework" can get him back in balance, and how anyone in any multi-dog household is at risk for this occurrence. (Links: Stories of the San Nicholas Cats | Wayne's Blog Post on Two-Year Anniversary of Project | Interactive Webcam of Cats' Enclosure)
Dog Talk (11-25-2011) New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson combines a passion for her dog Scout -- star of THE PUPPY DIARIES -- with a reporter's inquisitive mind about all aspects of raising a puppy in this delightful, honest and thoughtful book. Tracie finds a "bone to pick" with Jill about her personal decisions about feeding choices, while saluting her for viewing dog training from every perspective and trying to incorporate all possible theories in teaching her beautiful Scout not to pull on the leash; Jackson Galaxy, the cat behavior genius who stars in Animal Planet's My Cat From Hell, discusses the biggest challenges he had on the first season in managing some pretty out of control kitties, and how he uses feng shui and his own Spirit Essences to alter the energy and mood in some cat households. Tracie tells Jackson he'll be receiving signed copies of The Cat Bible for all the families he helped on his show.
Dog Talk (11-18-2011) Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson is the admittedly "dog-besotted" author of a luscious new book DOGS MAKE US HUMAN, with his text inspired by the dazzling photos of people and their dogs taken by wildlife photographer Art Wolfe during his travels around the globe -- Jeffrey calls into DOG TALK® from his home in New Zealand (where summer is just about to begin!) to discuss how he went from being a Freudian analyst to the author of the hugely best-selling book Dogs Don't Lie About Love (one of Tracie's old favorites) and discusses how a dog's love is better and truer than anything a mere human can manage; this captivating book really has to be on everyone's holiday wish list; Nancy Kerns, the editor of the indispensable Whole Dog Journal discusses some of the important recent articles in the magazine about Addison's disease (and how to know if your dog has it), Cushings Disease (ditto) and the newest rating of canned dog foods and how the list is compiled.
Dog Talk (11-11-2011) Do you remember the sad story of Gil, whose five-year-old guide dog Evie (the Furry Ferrari) was found to have cancer and died suddenly this year during chemotherapy? Well now there is terrific happy news! Gil talks about his new guide dog partner Satch, a big beautiful yellow Lab. Gil describes their partnership, from frolics in their local river (photo below) to squeezing into a small commuter plane for Satch's first-ever plane ride; Roselle is the heroine of Michael Hingson's riveting new book Thunder Dog, that chronicles the author escaping on 9/11 from the 78th floor of the World Trade Center Tower One with his brave and steady guide dog (recently awarded Hero of the Year by the American Humane Association). Mike Hingson also discusses the importance for all of us to really get to know our pet dogs better and to form a deeper relationship with them; artist Ron Burns created a tribute portrait of Roselle (a great gift for Labrador lovers!) with 40% of the sales supporting Roselle's Wish http://www.rosellefoundation.org/
Dog Talk (11-4-2011) Susan Orlean's RIN TIN TIN deserved every bit of the rave review it got on the front page of the New York Times Book Review. Susan talks to Tracie about how the arc of the canine film star's life and legend spans the history of dogs in our world, from war time to dog shows and how our "modern" understanding of the canine-human bond has actually been around a very long time; Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins joins Tracie to explain how the pheromone products Feliway for cats and D.A.P. (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) work on our pets' emotional equilibrium and the inestimable value to a little puppy of wearing a D.A.P. collar in the first months of adaptation away from his mother and litter; they also discuss the ethical travesty of vet-prescribed and scientifically engineered dry food that veterinarians sell for cats that 1) can cause urinary tract problems, 2) then sell a second food that is supposed to "cure" the urinary stones and crystals caused by the first food, 3) and then sell a third food intended to "cure" the second kind of urinary stones caused by the second food. And to top it off, feeding these urinary formulas of dry food to cats who do not yet have urinary crystals from dry food can actually cause the very problem, in a horrible daisy chain of unnecessary illness.
Dog Talk (10-28-2011) Patrick Kruse is the brains behind Ruff Wear -- outdoor gear for dogs, a company and products Tracie has long-admired for their functionality with active dogs in the real world. Patrick talks about the Omnijore system Ruff Wear has developed that allows any dog to pull someone in remarkable a array of settings (see product description below); Carol Quinn's book FOLLOW MY LEAD: What Training My Dogs Taught Me About Life, Love and Happiness is a terrific blend of personal and universal truths about how we love and learn and what our dogs contribute to that process; Dr. Donna Spector, the Official Second Opinion Vet of the show talks about how she gets to the bottom of tricky cases, like the badness on mini-Dachshund Huckleberry.
Dog Talk (10-21-2011) Adrienne D. Davis (the Vice Provost and the William M. Van Cleve Professor of Law at Washington University in St. Louis Missouri) discusses pet inheritance laws and how to protect your pets better than Leona Helmsley and Alexander McQueen, whose bequests were not legally air tight (she also discusses laws about animal welfare which extend to legal protection for guinea pigs in Switzerland!); Laura Pople is the head of SEER Farms Sanctuary, the much-needed sanctuary for pets that people need to place in a safe haven while they recover from medical problems, financial woes, deployment in the military or escape from a domestic abuse situation. She especially thanks the generous folks at Dr. Elsey's cat litter company who sent a second shipment of ONE TON of CAT ATTRACT litter to the sanctuary! SEER Farms has even taken in some colonies of feral cats (that had been looked after by people whose homes were lost in foreclosure) and Laura says the proof of Cat Attract litter's excellence is that those wild cats have never seen a litter box in their lives but go right into the box with Cat Attract in it!
Dog Talk (10-14-2011) This show celebrates PETFINDER.COM and shelter dogs everywhere! Betsy Saul was the founder of a brilliant new concept -- Petfinder.com -- when she created it as a "do-gooder hobby" in 1995. She tells all about how it has grown to the #1 pet site in the world, and now with over 2.5 million adoption per year (and an all time total of more than 17 million), and the millions of people who go to her website every day to indulge in "puppy por n" and dream about all the wonderful deserving dogs waiting for a real home; Michael Kloth's new photographic book SHELTER PUPPIES will melt your heart, and shows the world what gorgeous little pups are right in your nearby shelter (and all findable on Petfinder.com!); Lisa Prince Fishler is also a professional pet photographer who has enlisted Michael Kloth and other colleagues in a new non-profit called HeARTsSpeak.com which encourages professionals and other photographers to donate their talents to their local shelter to take better photos of the adoptable pets (which go up on Petfinder.com of course!) and vastly improve their chances of being adopted; Shana Bockleman talks about running the therapy dog program at her SPCA in Cincinnati and what sort of dogs make good candidates for working in schools, nursing homes, and hospitals.
Dog Talk (10-7-2011) The Anti-Puppy Mill Show! This show is devoted to issues surrounding the tragedy of puppy mills and what some people are doing about it. JON COOPER is the Majority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature and he discusses a new resolution he introduced to the Legislature to create the nation's first rating system for stores that sell puppies; Andy Nibley is the director of the superb documentary MADONNA OF THE MILLS, following one woman who goes into Pennsylvania puppy mills and quietly saves one soon-to-be discarded breeding dog after another and sends them into real homes; Ed Fritz is the Executive Director of the SOUTHAMPTON ANIMAL SHELTER, where they have taken in some of the dogs rescued by the Madonna of the Mills and Ed talks about these new arrivals.
Dog Talk (9-30-2011) Tracie asks Allison Denlea, the Official Trainer of the show, how to introduce her Pack of Three Big Dogs to the squirrel-sized chocolate Lab puppy next door and Allison discusses the precautions and safeguards necessary when any grown dog is around a vulnerable puppy; Spencer Quinn has another fun dog's-eye-view detective mystery in The Dog Who Knew Too Much (and Tracie finds out why he uses this pseudonym when—as his "other self" Peter Abrahams—he has won an Edgar Award and Stephen King has heaped praise on his writing); Ellen Torop is the head of the Medford, Long Island Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) and discusses the half Lab/half Golden Retriever puppies (raised by volunteers) and how they go on to assist people with physical challenges to be independent and all-around happier!
Dog Talk (9-23-2011) Lucy Postins, creator and owner of The Honest Kitchen, talks about her unusual new herbal teas for dogs and cats (yes, at long last, tea time for the four-legged set has arrived!) Tracie likes EASY PEESY for Scooby Doo's problems with bladder stones and has even made the calming tea QUIET for herself. (Everything from The Honest Kitchen is human edible and drinkable!) Tracie also thanks Lucy for her extraordinary generosity in choosing to provide The Honest Kitchen food for life for beautiful yellow Lab, Satchel, the marvelous new guide dog partnered with long time DOG TALK® listener Gil, who lost his beloved Evie the Furry Ferrari to cancer when she was only five (see the photo below of Gil and his gorgeous new partner!); Writer Wade Rouse talks about I'M NOT THE BIGGEST BITCH IN THIS RELATIONSHIP, the delightful collection of stories and essays he edited by a great group of fine and funny writers, several of whom have already been on DOG TALK® themselves! Tracie talks about how she lectures and "hounds" her neighbors and friends who are feeding supermarket bagged food to their dogs -- and/or dry "kitty crack" to their cats -- and pokes some fun at herself for being the bossy older sister nobody wants to peek in their pet food pantry!
Dog Talk (9-16-2011) THE OLD-TIMERS SHOW! A whole show devoted to the issues affecting your senior dogs (which Dr. Phil explains means FIVE years old and up for large breed dogs, but maybe only 9 years old for a toy breed). Dr Phil Padrid, the official vet of the show, uses personal examples and cites important studies to explain why seeing the vet for a wellness visit twice a year can improve the quality and length of your old-timer's life; Nancy Kerns, the delightful Editor of (the indispensable) The Whole Dog Journal discusses a series of articles written over the years by WDJ contributor Lisa Rodier, which focus on how to manage old-timer's issues like Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome and mobility challenges.
Dog Talk (9-9-2011) Dr. Stacey Radin formed Unleashed (www.UnleashedNY.org) to empower middle-school girls by pairing them with shelter dogs they work to get adopted; David Haworth, the new CEO of the Morris Animal Foundation shares his enthusiasm for the MAF's funding of medical advances for animals; Joanne Bourbeau, from the Humane Society of the United States in Vermont, talks about the need for legislation to protect dogs in even small breeding operations which can become horrible hoarding situations.
Dog Talk (9-2-2011) Tracie does a solo! A guest-free show in which Tracie talks about her shock at the amorality displayed by Adam Gopnik in his recent article "Dog Story" in The New Yorker, in which he blithely admits to knowingly buying a puppy mill puppy for his 11-year-old daughter from a "nice" pet store on Lexington Avenue (because it was easier than meeting a breeder) and never considers the lesson he is giving her in choosing not to add a puppy to their life the "right" way; she discusses how cats are not cold and impassive "furniture decorations" but instead have a rich and interesting intellectual and emotional life that is being ignored by many owners who do not provide stimulating play environments and opportunities for their felines to express their true "catness." Tracie mentions a recent New York Times Style Section article which tagged three "must have" fall clothing items, one of which was a braided fur jacket, which she suggests is something we all must not have in our wardrobe because of the ghastly consequences to the animals who gave up that fur; lastly, Tracie discusses how many people don't do anything for their older dogs who are limping and shuffling along in serious pain from arthritis, for which there are many treatments, including: a glucosamine supplement like Platinum Performance, anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids from a quality fish oil like Nordic Naturals; a liquid anti-inflammatory medication like Metacam, injections of Adequan, stem cell therapy like the one she got for her two dogs from Vet-Stem and then acupuncture, chiropractic, massage and swimming.
Dog Talk (8-26-2011) Jen Cronley is a reiki master—a native of Montauk on the East End (EastEndReiki.com) who discusses the value of using this hands-on healing, especially for older pets. Tracie suggests using it when putting a pet to sleep to ease both the humans and the animal as it crosses the Rainbow Bridge; Dr. Kate Hurley at U.C. Davis Veterinary School talks about her study (funded by the wonderful Morris Animal Foundation) of improved cages for cats in shelters, making them more cat-friendly and increasing adoptions; Staff Sergeant Christopher Fall calls from Kyrgyzstan (pronounced Kurgistan!) and talks about his remarkable Military Working Dog Lucky, a 10-year-old Belgian Malinois who works alongside Staff Sergeant Hall and other handlers as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, keeping our bases safe around the world.
Dog Talk (8-19-2011) Jennifer Holland, the author of UNLIKELY FRIENDSHIPS (who is also a senior editor at National Geographic) talks about the collection of breathtaking photographs and amazing stories of cross-species friendships she has gathered from around the world; Dr. Alice Villalobos (veterinary oncologist and also head of the Society for Veterinary Medical Ethics) discusses the options of palliative care and Pawspice for older animals with life-limiting illnesses and the moral dilemmas that veterinarians face every day in putting animals to sleep; Neil Abramson author of UNSAID, talks about how nearly losing his own veterinarian wife inspired him to write his novel from the point of view of a veterinarian who has died young and wonders what her life has amounted to, wrestles with the life and death decisions veterinarians have to make every day and worries about encountering all the animals she has put to sleep, and leaving behind a grieving husband and a menagerie of animals.
Dog Talk (8-12-2011) Victoria Stillwell, star of Tracie's favorite dog training television show IT'S ME OR THE DOG (and the book of the same name) talks about the challenge of finding a well-informed, gentle and effective dog trainer and how she has started Positively Dog Trainers, her own system of evaluating trainers; Tracie talks about misunderstandings about good dog nutrition by telling about a recent family picnic at her friends in Tyringham, Massachusetts where there were more dogs than people; and DOG TALK's® own Dr. Phil Padrid tells you the most important things to watch out for in protecting against risks in anesthesia for your dog and cat, recommending that you check "dog breed related genetic conditions" to see if your dog is at higher risk with anesthesia, like Dobermans are (and Maine Coon cats, too);
Tracie talks about how she brought a copy of I'LL WAIT IN THE CAR for the hostess of the dog-happy lunch in Tyringham and how all the dog-loving people loved the book, a dandy gift for any dog lovers in your life.
Dog Talk (8-05-2011) Don't take lumps on your pets for granted! Get every bump checked with a needle biopsy by your vet to make sure it is not cancerous! Veterinary oncologist Dr. Brian Huber discusses how to find cancers early in dogs and cats, the good cure rates for mast cell and other cancers when found early; Naturopathic (human patient!) doctor Keri Marshall, ND, talks about how people and their pets need omega-3 essential oils (preferably from fish oil like Nordic Naturals); Laura-Flynn Amato has personally saved over 2,000 neglected breeding dogs from Pennsylvania puppy mills and is the subject of the HBO documentary (airing August 24th) called MADONNA OF THE MILLS.
Dog Talk (7-29-2011) Hear all about my new podcast, interviews with Wayne Pacelle (CEO of the Humane Society of the United States) and I brag about our new joint venture, a weekly podcast on the HSUS.org website called HUMANE TALK, in which I interview Wayne about topics he raises in his thought-provoking blogs; a heart-warming welcome to Satch, the new guide from Pilot Dogs for Gil Lutz, who recently lost his beautiful young guide Evie to cancer (and inspired the Cancer Special show); Gil talks about the guide dogs who preceded Satch and what that partnership and bond between man and dog is really like; and a fabulously generous offer of the healthiest dog food on the planet for Satch from Lucy Postins, founder of The Honest Kitchen, the raw dehydrated "human tested" food my dogs eat as part of every meal.
Dog Talk (7-22-2011) The MILITARY WORKING DOG SPECIAL! An in-depth look at all aspects of the great canines (and their handlers) who are serving our country all over the world: Dr. Stewart Hilliard explains how dogs are chosen over in Europe for a career in the military; Major Roberts talks about the training of both dogs and handlers from all branches of the military; and Veterinary Behaviorist Walter Burghardt talks about providing medical and psychological support for the over 1,500 canines working for the U.S. worldwide, in particular how to recognize and handle PTSD in dogs.
Dog Talk (7-15-2011) THE SECOND ANXIETY SPECIAL! So many listeners were interested in solutions to their dogs' issues with separation and thunderstorms, this show is entirely devoted to the topic. Hear a sample of "Through a Dog's Ear" played by concert pianist Lisa Spector, who partnered with a "sound scientist" to develop a series of CDs to soothe dogs' nerves. The Calm your Canine series can also settle down a roomful of four-year-old humans! And there's also the "Driving Edition: Music to Calm your Dog in the Car"; Susan Sharpe, dog trainer and developer of the ANXIETY WRAP and FACE WRAP explains the science behind the development of these tools for naturally calming an anxious dog at home or in the car; Dr.Terry Curtis, one of the 50 board-certified Veterinary Behaviorists in the country discusses how she uses D.A.P. (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) on every canine house call and often uses FELIWAY on the kitties with behavior issues. She teaches at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine and will travel 3 hours in any direction from there to make house calls for lucky Floridians with pet problems!
Tracie Interviewed: I recently had the opportunity to be interviewed about how dogs and cats fit into the family unit on a live Internet radio show called "Family First." For anyone who has children of any age and is considering adding a pet to your household or to anyone who has pets that are creating tension or discord between parents or parents and children, I invite you to hear my advice in this interview. Additionally, I talk about the causes of dog bites to children and how to educate yourself and your children to prevent being bitten, a topic I recently discussed with Victoria Stillwell from "It's Me or the Dog" on DOG TALK®.

Dog Talk (6-24-2011) A Whole Show Devoted To Understanding Cancer Chemotherapy: More than half of the dogs whose people are listening to this show will get some kind of cancer. You owe it to yourself and your pets to learn everything you can now. This show was inspired by the tragic and sudden death of the 5-year-old Black Lab Evie, who was the guide dog for my long time listener Gil. He discovered her cancer and got what he thought was the best treatment, yet was shocked and confused that she died within a week of receiving chemotherapy. I wanted to know more about what risks there are in chemotherapy and also whether the treatment given Evie was correct. The first guest on this show is Dr. Brian Huber, a wonderful and smart cancer veterinarian I met a few years ago at Western Veterinary Conference, where I had been invited by Jack Stephens, the owner of Pets Best insurance (which would have paid for this or any cancer treatment, by the way). Dr Huber owns Oncura Partners, which provides chemotherapy protocol and instructions for people's own vets to administer -- the most up-to-date medications, protective gear and a support system for the primary veterinarian with questions or emergencies. The second guest is Dr. Donna Spector (www.SpectorDVM.com) who is the official Second Opinion Vet on this show, who discusses the particulars of this case and how she can function as a support system for you and your primary vet when you are making decisions and going through cancer diagnosis and treatment. (For the entire email exchange between Dr. Huber, Dr. Spector and Tracie, please go to my blog post.)

Ticks are here already! As you will hear in Tracie's conversation with Dr. Elizabeth, Tracie found a tick on herself after only one warm day during a still-freezing Spring. Dr. Elizabeth said she heard the same thing from a person in Minnesota -- which means our dogs are already at risk for exposure to any of the terrible tick-borne diseases that can have lifelong consequences for our dogs. Dog Talk® (12-31-2010) Tracie's celebrates DOG TALK's® 200th show (WOW! can you believe it?!) - and the very last one for 2010 - with a man she holds in the highest regard - Wayne Pacelle, who is the CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, which Tracie supports in every possible way. Please enjoy their wide-ranging conversation discussing topics which have been distorted by the well-funded opposition to HSUS (agri-business that wants no meddling in the way factory-farmed animals are treated) so that many otherwise thoughtful, animal-loving people have gotten on an anti-HSUS bandwagon. Tracie wants to help reverse this trend by letting Wayne dispel general ignorance about what HSUS does and why. The conversation includes explaining the true purpose of HSUS and why funding individual shelters is not part of their mandate - the relationship between HSUS being instrumental in both jailing Michael Vick and also involved in his rehabilitation and outreach to inner city dog-fighting youth - busting the myth that HSUS is against pet ownership or responsible dog breeding, and generally sharing a year's end message that we all can do some moral accounting and improve on the decisions we make about where we spend our money and how that affects many animals on the planet, not just our pets.
A happy healthy and vibrant New Year to all the two-legged listeners and their four-legged companions - we'll talk again in 2011!

Merry Christmas! (and I mean that in a secular sense, so no one need feel left out or offended!) I hope Santa is good to one and all. Next week is the last show of 2010 and the incredible 200th DOG TALK® I will celebrate by devoting the whole show to a wide-ranging conversation with Humane Society of the United States CEO Wayne Pacelle.
