Tracie explains the origins of The Dog Bible: “The answer to why I wrote this book is sort of the opposite of Mt. Everest and why people climb it - in this case, I wrote the book because it did not exist. Having owned and loved dogs literally from the time I was born, I have so often wanted information or had problems and been unable to find information or get reliable advice. I realized that I’m not alone - all dog lovers need a book they can reach for with support and information on any subject relating to their dogs. The way that parents can consult Dr. Spock to clarify a situation and make informed decisions for their particular situation, so should people have an encyclopedic guide for their canine companions. The idea for this book actually originated with my father, the author A.E. Hotchner. He said I never came into New York City because I preferred being in the woods with my dogs – which I happily admitted. So he suggested that I write a book about dogs since I’d been communing so easily with four-legged beasts since my formative years growing up alongside young Pango – and showed no signs of letting up. Never one to turn down a challenge – and after a heated discussion about whether I’d ever met a dog I didn’t like - I rose to the occasion of this book and set out to climb Mt. Everest.”
