DOG TALK’S  VERY OWN “DR. PHIL” – Philip Padrid, DVM, our Official Vet

Our Official Vet - Dr Philip Padrid, DVM

Tracie's Note: Dr. Phil has just moved to New Mexico and is no longer in private practice. However, he will continue to be the Official vet of DOG TALK® andhe remains the world's leading authority on feline asthma.

Our own Dr. Phil (Padrid) has recently become the Southwest Regional Medical Director of the Veterinary Centers of America (VCA) and now lives North of Albuquerque New Mexico with his new wife.

As the world's leading feline asthma specialist, Phil Padrid is sought-after around the world fro his expertise.

He is also Associate Professor of Molecular Medicine (adj) at the University of Chicago and Associate Professor of Small Animal Medicine (adj) at The Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine

We are so lucky at Dog Talk to have the informational back-up and frequent presence of Dr. Phil on the show. He lives and practices in Chicago but has generously made himself available to us on Saturdays, right after playing his favorite sport, basketball.

Once you’ve heard his warm, kind and wise opinions and advice you may find yourself thinking that Chicago isn’t that far away! But instead of moving to the Windy City to get his help, you can just stay connected to Dog Talk.

Dr. Phil graduated from Cornel University in 1985, where he received an award in cardiology, then completed his internship at Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital, his residency at UC-Davis Veterinary School and then finished a fellowship at UC-Davis Medical School in 1990.

For 10 years he was an Associate Professor of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He joined Family Pet Animal Hospital full time in 2003 as a general practitioner with a specialty in respiratory medicine.

Dr. Phil will generously consult with you or your vet regarding any asthma or other breathing related issues with your dog or cat. He feel it is a public service to share his knowledge - I would ask that if you do take advantage of his kindness that you make a donation to the ASPCA, his favorite charity, in his honor.

Our Official Dermatologist: Dr. John Gordon, DVM

Dr. John Gordon, with BuckThis photo is Dr. John Gordon, with one of his dogs, Buck. "He is a wonderful companion with too numerous to count qualities including visits to Childrens Hospital every other week and insists on retrieving the morning paper from the end of the driveway. He is undergoing his fourth treatment of chemotherapy for a primary pulmonary chondrosarcoma (a rare tumor) after having his right cranial lung lobe removed 8 weeks ago. He was visiting the children two weeks later."

Thank you! Tracie's shows are the most educational and sincere out there, and I know when she has a guest on and if there is a product behind them, it will be a good one. I will be clicking to visit your site this evening.

Regards,
Helen

I was so impressed by Dr. Gordon's knowledge and ease in explaining things that I invited him to become the Official Dermatologist of both my radio shows and am honored to say that he accepted. So now you know that I can answer your questions about skin issues with the back-up of one of the best in his field!

Buck (In Memoriam)

Buck, our own dermatologist Dr. John Gordon's beloved Lab, passed away recently after a valiant fight with cancer. This is Buck wearing his Children's Hospital ID tag. He would visit Children's Hospital every other Thursday for several hours to visit the children. As Dr. John said, Buck never met a child he didn't love. And I have to say that while I never had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Buck, just the expression on that sweet face brings me to tears as I realize yet again how lucky we all are to have these dear, dear creatures share and fill our lives.

Our Oncologist

I am really honored to welcome the world renowned veterinary oncologist Dr. Alice Villalobos, DVM as Our Official Cancer Specialist. She is not just brilliant in her diagnosis and treatment of cancer in dogs and cats, but she is an award-winning humanitarian who honors the human-animal bond in her life and in her work in a way that is an inspiration to everyone.

Dr. Alice Drives NASCAR With Pets Best

We all got to get behind the wheel of Nascars at the Las Vegas speedway. We were "Racing to Save Pets" courtesy of Pets Best insurance, which sponsors Brett Thompson's Nascar to raise awareness of pets in the shelters for adoption. And guess who won the lady's division?? The official cancer doctor of both shows, Dr. Alice!! (Click photos below to see larger versions in new window.)

Neo with Octopus

When Tracie was recently in Las Vegas at the Western Veterinary Conference along with Dr. Alice Villalobos, the owner of Kong toys gave Tracie this swell pink octopus Kong (pink being Tracie's signature color). Somehow the huge pink toy wound up in Dr. Alice's bag and made its way home to Southern California where her beloved Olde English Bulldog, Neo, could not be parted with it. From the look on his face, would you want to ask for it back??"

Canine and Feline Geriatric OncologyTo those who have heard me interview Dr. Alice on the show, you know what I am talking about. You also heard me talk about her very readable textbook with the serious title: Canine and Feline Geriatric Oncology: Honoring the Human-Animal Bond. (in simple language, it means cancer in old dog and cats and what that means for us). Yes, it's a textbook for vets but it's also accessible to the rest of us who want to understand more about what causes cancer, how to catch it in the early stages, what treatment options are available, and how to deal with some of the emotions it brings up for us when we get a cancer diagnosis in our four-legged family members.

There's a link here to the book and the gracious offer by Dr. Alice to extend her discount to all CAT CHAT™ and DOG TALK® followers.

"Will We Change on Early Spay-Neuter?"

Early spay and neuter has become the norm in the USA. Some states are asking voters to pass legislation that would require citizens to have their pets spayed or neutered by puberty. Overpopulation is the driver for requiring pet owners to spay and neuter their pets. But what if large scale studies found out that the early spay-neuter procedure may actually jeopardize the health of our personal pets...?

Sabine Contreras and Quigley

Sabine Contreras Bio

Sabine Contreras is originally a native of Germany and moved to the U.S. in 1999, after meeting her husband. They live on the West Side of Los Angeles, California and share their home with Quigley, a terrier mix, and five cats.

Involved with dogs and dog related activities for over 25 years, Sabine is very interested in natural, preventive dog care as well as canine nutrition and has accumulated experience in these fields through thousands of hours of independent research and academic study.

After completing coursework in Animal Nutrition, Care, Physiology, Diseases and Parasitology, Sabine earned her certification in Animal Care from the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

Her specific research of commercial pet foods began in early 2001 and she soon found herself answering questions from many pet owners, which inspired her to create the Dog Food Project Web site. An expanding volume and increasing amount of visitors required moving locations several times, but since March 2006 it resides on its own, permanent domain at www.DogFoodProject.com.

As a Canine Care & Nutrition Consultant, Sabine is available for individual consultations, ranging from nutritional evaluations and special needs diets ( such as sensitivities, allergies, healthy weight loss, seniors etc.) to general care and fitness.
